Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can my child start taking classes?
Children as young as 5 years old are eligible to take classes. We offer mixed classes where families may participate together. Class make-up and student participation varies, so talk to the Instructor for recommended days and times.

How safe is Taekwondo to learn?
The Martinez Taekwondo program is safe and fun for students of all ages and physical abilities. Classes are supervised by black belt Instructors. All students are taught techniques in a step by step manner and at their own pace. A thorough stretching routine, matted flooring, and the use of protective safety equipment are all part of our commitment to ensuring student safety. You will also find our Instructors to be friendly, patient, enthusiastic and great motivators.

What if I never did Martial Arts before or if I am currently out of shape?
At Martinez Taekwondo, we have ongoing enrollment, so beginners are always welcome. In addition, the belt system used in Taekwondo allows all students to train at their own pace and to improve their physical condition gradually.

Do I have to sign a contract?

No, but most of our students do commit to an extended-length course. Depending on what rank you wish to achieve, we offer various short-term and long-term course plans.

How often do students attend classes and how flexible is the schedule?
In order to attain benefits and progress at a reasonable rate, we recommend that students attend classes two to three times per week. Our convenient location and full time staff allow us to offer an extremely flexible class schedule. Classes for all levels and ages are held several times a day five days a week and students are able to choose the classes that work out best for them.

Does your school participate in tournaments and competitions?
Yes, our students participate in state, national and international competitions. We offer special sparring and competition classes that are available with the permission of the Head Instructor.  BUT, tournaments and competitions are NOT a requirement for your training.

I achieved a belt rank at another school. Can I start at that rank at your school?
Generally this is possible, you must provide proof of rank such as a certificate of rank from your past Martial Arts school. However, if you don’t have this, when you come in we can evaluate your past training and recommend a proper starting rank that is commensurate with your experience. Accelerated courses are available for those with previous Taekwondo experience.

Why belts and how long does it take to become a Black Belt?
Many people have the idea that the belt is an ego symbol for the Martial Artist. In fact, it is nothing more than a training aid for the Instructor. Each belt tells the Instructor what a person can be expected to know, and what new techniques they are ready to be taught. It also points out to the newer students who the senior students are so they can go to them and ask for technical advice and assistance. Beginners start with a white belt, then advance through formal testing procedures to high white, yellow, high yellow, green, high green, blue, high blue, three stages of red, and then to Black Belt.  Upon attaining a Black Belt, students continue their training into the upper ranks of Black Belts.  The Black Belt in Taekwondo is symbolic of an advanced level of skill as well as above average physical, mental, and emotional strength. The length of study necessary to attain a Black Belt varies depending on one’s effort and dedication. On average, our students train for a period of three to three and a half years to attain Black Belt status.

How long does it take to start seeing results?
Studying Taekwondo has lifelong benefits and is designed to be a lifelong study. However, initial benefits start appearing after a few months of consistent practice. Children begin to show improved listening, confidence, and self discipline. Adults gain more energy and feel healthier. Over time, the benefits become even more apparent and dramatic. As with learning any skill, consistent attendance and personal effort make a big impact on one’s knowledge and rate of progress. One thing is certain, whether you are interested in the benefits of Olympic Taekwondo for yourself or your child, now is a great time to start!!

As a Parent how can I help my child?
Many parents ask how they can help their child in the study of Taekwondo. Obviously, unless you are a trained and certified Black Belt Instructor or Associate Instructor, there is very little that you can do to help them from a technical standpoint, but there is a great deal that you can do from a parental standpoint.

First and foremost, be supportive and positive. Tell your child that you are proud of them, and that you love them, and that you are genuinely interested in what they are doing. One way you can show that is by coming and watching them in class. This demonstrates in a most concrete way that you think they are important and deserving of your time and attention. We always have a place for spectators, and encourage them at every opportunity.

Another way you can show support for your child is by joining the class yourself. Many people find that this is truly a family sport that all can enjoy, since everyone learns and advances at their own rate.
